228th Street, Springfield Gardens, Queens, New York - Ribbon Cutting of New Solar Project

The first New York City skyscraper (Bloomberg L.P.’s midtown headquarters) will be “powered by solar” using remote net metering and benefiting from energy credits generated by a 1,518 kW solar installation installed on the roof of Idlewild 228th Street LLC’s new air freight logistics building in Springfield Gardens, Queens, New York, and on the roofs of two office/warehouse buildings situated directly across the street owned by another of our real estate partnerships, JFK Airport Park Partners LLC.

This innovative solar project was developed working together with our solar contractor, EnterSolar, our energy consultant, Prescient Energy, and with funding provided by private green energy investors and Governor Cuomo’s NY-Sun Initiative.  This three-building system is the largest rooftop solar array in Queens and is among the largest rooftop solar projects in New York State, comprised of over 5,500 solar panels.  The power generated will be converted to energy credits, and applied to energy usage at Bloomberg L.P.’s 731 Lexington Avenue headquarters and at a Bloomberg data center located on West Street.

On an annual basis, this solar project will generate over 1.8 million kW hours, enough clean renewable electricity to power more than 244 typical homes for a year, and will provide significant environmental benefits to both Bloomberg and the NYC community, including the avoidance of almost 1.3 million lbs. of CO2 per year.

The launch event for this solar project took place at 12 noon on Tuesday, September 15th.  Con Edison was part of the program trumpeting the solar project and David Sandbank, Director of NYSERDA, part of Governor Cuomo’s NY-Sun Initiative, spoke as well.
